Established in 2001, the Dot NAME generic domain extension is the only one planned for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to secure john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Existing third-level domain names remained online.
